Back in early 2009, James Hetfield walked into EMG with a specific mission for president Rob Turner: build a set that looks stealth but hits with the clarity and snap of a passive pickup while keeping the active tone that’s defined his sound for decades. The result is the JH Set, a neck/bridge pairing that shares DNA with the pickups Hetfield has run for 30 years, but plays like an entirely different beast.
The JH-N (neck) steps up from the classic 60 with individual ceramic pole pieces and a larger, taller bobbin core. That extra real estate translates directly into more attack, higher output, and a fuller low end sitting in the neck slot. The JH-B (bridge) keeps the same core design but swaps in steel pole pieces instead of the 81’s bar magnets, dialing back inductance for that familiar tight, aggressive attack with a cleaner, more controlled bottom end.
