Built directly from James Hetfield’s input to EMG founder Rob Turner, the JH Set was born from a specific challenge back in 2009: give a passive pickup’s clarity and punch a stealthy new look, without sacrificing the aggressive active tone that’s defined Hetfield’s sound for decades. The result isn’t a tweak of an existing EMG design – it’s its own animal.
The set pairs the JH-N neck pickup with the JH-B bridge pickup. Both draw on the same core design principles as the pickups James has run for 30 years, but push further. The JH-N uses individual ceramic pole pieces on a larger, taller bobbin than EMG’s 60, giving the neck position more attack, more output, and a fuller low end. The JH-B shares that larger core but swaps in steel pole pieces instead of the 81’s bar magnets, keeping the tight attack players expect while trimming inductance for a cleaner bottom end.
This particular set comes finished in Brushed Gold as part of EMG’s Metal Works line – stainless steel caps made in the USA, also available in Gold, Chrome, Brushed Chrome, and Brushed Black Chrome. It’s the same active EMG power and clarity the company built its name on, now wearing a sharper, more modern face plate. Installation is handled through EMG’s Solderless Installation System, keeping wiring simple for anyone swapping pickups at home.
