Description
Back in 2009, James Hetfield walked into EMG with a challenge for company president Rob Turner: build a set that looks stealthy but hits like a passive pickup while keeping the active tone he’d built a career on. The result is the JH Set — a pairing of the JH-N (neck) and JH-B (bridge) that shares DNA with the 60/81 pair Hetfield relied on for three decades, but isn’t just a rebadge.
The JH-N swaps in individual ceramic pole pieces on a larger, taller bobbin/core than the 60, so the neck pickup pushes more attack, higher output, and a fuller low end than you’d expect from a neck position. The JH-B keeps that same beefed-up core but trades the 81’s bar magnets for steel pole pieces, giving you that familiar razor-tight attack with reduced inductance for a cleaner, more controlled low end under high-gain drive.
This particular set wears EMG’s Gold Metal Works finish — one of six U.S.A.-made stainless steel cap options (Gold, Chrome, Brushed Gold, Brushed Chrome, and Brushed Black Chrome) that EMG rolled out to give players a premium look beyond the classic black. Whether polished or brushed, these caps fit any EMG active or passive humbucker and deliver the same clarity and output, just with a different finish on top.
Installation is handled through EMG’s Solderless Installation System, so wiring in the JH Set doesn’t require a soldering iron.

- JH-B bridge pickup: steel pole pieces for tight attack and cleaner low end
