Description
The P5AX takes the familiar P5A split-coil format — built for 5-string P-bass configurations — and pairs it with EMG’s X Series preamp electronics. Where standard active EMGs can feel a bit compressed or one-dimensional under a light touch, the X preamp opens things back up, restoring a sense of dynamic headroom and pick/finger sensitivity that’s usually associated with passive pickups.
The result sits in an interesting middle ground: you still get the low noise, punch, and consistency EMG actives are known for, but with a feel that responds more naturally to how hard you dig in. Back off and the pickup cleans up and breathes a bit more; dig in and it pushes forward with the same solid low-end authority P-style pickups are built for.
