The P5J takes the proven PJ formula and stretches it to fit a 5-string neck, giving you the same split-coil P pickup paired with a single LJ Jazz-style unit at the bridge. It’s a combo that’s been a workhorse for bassists who need both thump and definition without switching instruments.
The P half handles the low-register muscle — that classic thick, rounded punch P-Bass players have leaned on for decades. The LJ at the bridge fills in the midrange and adds sparkle up top, sharpening pick and slap attack so notes cut through a mix instead of getting buried. Run them together and you’ve got a genuinely versatile voice: dial back toward the P for a warm Motown-style groove, lean on the LJ for snappy modern funk, or blend for something in between.
Note: the bridge Jazz pickup is EMG’s standard length (3.75″) with a max string spacing of 2.75″.
