The EMG SLV came out of a collaboration with Steve Lukather, the Toto guitarist and go-to session player whose fingerprints are on countless records. He wanted a single coil with more muscle than the norm, and EMG answered by beefing up the coil windings compared to their SAV pickup – the result pushes the tone into meatier territory without losing that single coil character players reach for in the first place.

Under the hood, the SLV uses individual pole pieces rather than a single bar magnet, which keeps string-to-string response even and balanced. EMG tucks all of it beneath a solid black cap, so from the outside you get a clean, uniform look with none of the visible pole piece dots – just a smooth, finished appearance that sits neatly in the pickup cavity.

Because it’s an active EMG design, the SLV runs on battery power and delivers a hotter, more consistent output than passive single coils, with lower noise and a tighter low end. It’s a solid choice for players who love the snap and clarity of a single coil but want extra girth for driving an amp harder or cutting through a dense mix.
