The Super 77 set is EMG’s answer to that sprawling, gritty 70s humbucker sound — the kind of tone that cleans up beautifully when you back off the volume knob and dig in hard when you don’t. It starts with a genuinely traditional foundation: copper-wound coils and ceramic pole pieces built in the classic open-coil style, so it looks and behaves like a passive vintage humbucker at heart.
What sets it apart is the plug-on preamp EMG built into the Retro Active line. It converts that passive design into a low-impedance, active output without stripping away the pickup’s natural dynamics. You still get real touch response — soft picking and rolled-back volume yield glassy cleans, while heavier attack pushes the pickup into a dirtier, more aggressive territory. The active circuitry mainly means you lose the hum, hiss, and interference that usually come with traditionally wound coils, so the tone stays quiet and defined at any gain level.
This particular set comes in black, long shaft (19mm, Les Paul-style) with standard string spacing, and installs entirely solderless via EMG’s plug & play system — a real time-saver if you’re not looking to break out the iron.
