DiMarzio built the Air Classic for players who want that late-’50s PAF sweetness but refuse to settle for the trade-offs that come with soft magnets. Instead of relying on Alnico 2 or a deliberately weakened Alnico 5 to keep string pull low, DiMarzio’s Airbucker design uses a full-strength Alnico 5 magnet while physically reducing its pull on the string. The payoff is a pickup that responds like a vintage humbucker but tracks dynamics with far more nuance – notes bloom fast, sustain stays articulate, and the whole thing feels almost vocal under your fingers.
Where a conventional weak-magnet humbucker tends to blur as notes ring out, the Air Classic holds its high-end definition through the decay. Chords stay untangled, harmonics are easier to summon and sustain on demand, and the overall picture stays three-dimensional instead of collapsing into mud – a direct result of that stronger, better-controlled magnetic field.
DiMarzio recommends the Air Classic in the neck slot when paired with an equal-or-hotter bridge pickup, or in the bridge position alongside single-coils or a milder neck pickup. It’s equally at home in solid body, hollow, and semi-hollow guitars.
