Description
The DiMarzio Crunch Lab (DP228FBK) is the bridge half of John Petrucci’s signature pickup set, engineered specifically to handle high-gain rhythm work without turning into mush. Where a lot of hot bridge humbuckers trade clarity for output, the Crunch Lab keeps individual notes and chord voicings distinct even when you’re slamming palm-muted riffs through a saturated amp.
- Developed in collaboration with John Petrucci
- F-spaced for guitars with Floyd Rose or similar wide-spaced bridges
- Black bobbin with black pole pieces
- Voiced for tight, articulate crunch and big low-end punch
Tonally, expect a forward midrange push and a compressed, punchy attack that stays focused rather than harsh or fizzy – the kind of character that lets fast alternate-picked runs cut through a dense mix without needing extra EQ correction. It pairs naturally with a cleaner-voiced neck pickup (like the companion Liquifire) so you get contrast between rhythm crunch and lead sustain, but it also holds up fine as a standalone bridge upgrade in any F-spaced humbucker route.
If your current bridge pickup gets flabby or indistinct under gain, or you’re chasing that percussive, note-for-note clarity associated with modern progressive metal tones, the Crunch Lab is a proven, purpose-built solution rather than a general-purpose humbucker asking to do too much.
