Description
Long before humbuckers took over, Gibson’s original P90 was already carving out that thick, woody midrange players still chase today. The SP90-1 Vintage neck pickup rebuilds that 1946 formula from the ground up, right down to being wound on the same Leesona winder used for the real 1950s units. It’s a soapbar that trades the glassy chime of a Strat or Tele single-coil for something rounder and more assertive.
- Short, wide bobbin construction pushes output and midrange well above typical single-coil territory
- Wound with vintage-correct plain enamel wire for a smooth, sweet-toned voice
- Slightly taller .745″ vintage height profile – noticeably different from the SP90-2 and SP90-3, so check clearance before routing
- Ships with single-conductor hookup cable
- Available separately for neck and bridge, or as a matched balanced set
This pickup rewards mahogany-bodied guitars with rosewood boards, letting the wood’s natural warmth blend with the P90’s inherent thickness. It’s equally at home in jazz, swing, and rockabilly settings as it is driving into classic and heavy rock territory – think country twang one minute, gritty crunch the next.
Plenty of players run this Vintage version in the neck paired with a hotter SP90-2 or SP90-3 Custom in the bridge, giving you a smoother rhythm voice and a sharper lead tone in a single guitar. A great starting point if you want authentic P90 character without guessing at wiring or specs.
