Description
The Thornbucker started with a simple complaint from guitarist Pete Thorn: too many modern humbuckers sound killer through a cranked amp but turn to mush the moment you back off the gain or reach for the neck/middle pickup. He’d played enough great vintage guitars to know it didn’t have to be that way — real PAF-style pickups can be clear, dynamic, and expressive whether you’re playing clean, crunchy, or full-on dirty. Suhr took that challenge and built the Thornbucker to match.
This is the bridge-position unit, wound to 50mm spacing and loaded with an Alnico IV magnet and plain enamel wire for that classic early-humbucker voice — full-bodied but never dark or compressed. It cleans up beautifully, holds articulation with pedals stacked in front of it, and won’t leave you scrambling to retune your amp when you switch from a single-coil guitar. Four-conductor hookup wire is included, so you’ve got full freedom for coil-splitting, series/parallel switching, or whatever wiring scheme your build calls for.
Whether you’re restoring a vintage-style build or upgrading a modern humbucker guitar that’s lost its personality, this pickup brings back the touch-sensitivity and tonal range that made 50s-era ‘patent applied for’ pickups legendary — with the consistency and quality control you expect from Suhr.
