Back in early 2009, James Hetfield walked into EMG with a challenge for president Rob Turner: build a set that looks stealth but delivers the cut and clarity of a passive pickup without losing the active tone that’s defined his sound for decades. The JH Set is the result, and it’s not a reskin of any existing EMG – it’s its own animal.
- JH-N (neck): Individual ceramic poles sit on bobbins with a larger, taller core than the 60, pushing more attack, higher output, and a fuller low end out of the neck position.
- JH-B (bridge): Same larger core, but steel pole pieces instead of the 81’s bar magnets, keeping that familiar tight attack while cleaning up the low-end inductance.
This version comes finished in chrome as part of EMG’s Metal Works line – stainless steel caps made in the USA, also available in gold, brushed gold, brushed chrome, and brushed black chrome, letting you dress your active tone in a look that matches your build. EMG basically invented the recognizable “black pickup” aesthetic, and Metal Works gives players and builders a wider palette without touching the electronics that made them famous.
Both pickups drop in with EMG’s Solderless Installation System, so getting James’s exact rig into your guitar doesn’t mean breaking out the iron. If you’ve spent 30 years chasing that Hetfield attack and low-end control, this set is patterned straight from the pickups he’s actually played to get there.
