Description
Think of the S-Deluxe as Joe Barden’s answer to the question, “what if a Strat pickup had none of the noise and all of the detail?” It’s built as the single-coil-body counterpart to his Danny Gatton Tele sets, and it keeps the character everyone expects from a Strat — glassy top end, snappy attack — while stretching the frequency response wider and flattening out the dead spots that plague old-school designs.
This is the bridge-position half of a two-model pair (the other covers neck and middle). Because it’s fully humbucking, you get dead-silent output no matter how much gain you’re running, and because it’s remarkably sensitive to height adjustment, you can dial output and tone character just by moving it closer to or farther from the strings. Players who split time between Strats and Teles will notice the bridge pickup in particular pulls off that twangy, aggressive Telecaster bark — something Strat bridge pickups rarely manage.
The staggered-blade pole design found across all Joe Barden single-coil-sized bridge pickups solves the classic drop-out problem on the low and high E strings, so output stays even across the full width of the neck. Combine that with the S-Deluxe’s naturally hollow, three-dimensional in-between tones, and you’ve got a pickup that expands what a Strat can do rather than just quieting it down.
