Description
If your J-style neck pickup sounds a little dull or boxy, the Bartolini 9CBJD-S3 is built to fix that. Part of the Classic Bass (CB) series, it’s a passive, dual in-line coil design that cancels hum the traditional way — two coils side by side, just like a vintage J bass — but with a voicing that pushes noticeably more air and clarity into the treble range without thinning out your lows or low-mids.
Bartolini casts these pickups in epoxy, which keeps microphonics and unwanted feedback out of the signal so you get a clean, focused output whether you’re slapping, fingerstyle, or digging in with a pick. It’s a popular swap among players and techs who want a Jazz Bass to sound more articulate and hi-fi without losing that classic J character.
One thing to watch closely before you order: this is the ‘short’ neck-length pickup, measuring 3-5/8″ — not the same length as the 3-3/4″ bridge pickup found in a standard J bass. That size difference matters. Some modern basses use two long, bridge-length pickups instead, and if yours is one of them, you’ll need Bartolini’s “LN” (long neck) version rather than this one. A handful of basses use two short neck-length pickups too, so always measure your existing pickup before ordering to make sure the fit is right.
