DiMarzio didn’t set out to clone a vintage PAF — they reverse-engineered one, using Larry DiMarzio’s personal 1959 cherry sunburst Les Paul® as the benchmark. The result is this matched neck/bridge set (DP103BK neck, DP223BK bridge), built around the same weak-magnetic-field concept that let old PAFs breathe: strings ring out longer, attack stays articulate, and the whole thing cleans up or breaks up purely off your pick hand.
Both pickups use 42-gauge custom-coated wire, laid down on computer-controlled winders for consistent, repeatable coils, then dipped to kill squeal and microphonics. Nickel-silver covers with DiMarzio’s newer plating are more magnetically transparent than the old originals, so nothing gets choked off tonally.
The DP103BK Neck is smooth without turning to mud, and holds up whether you drop it in neck or bridge position. The DP223BK Bridge runs hotter, splitting the difference between DiMarzio’s Virtual PAF and Virtual Hot PAF — same volume as the Hot, but with the low-end weight and midrange focus of the standard Virtual PAF, and highs that come across bigger and smoother than either. Coil-split it on the 4-conductor wiring and you get a genuinely useful, non-sterile single-coil voice.
