Description
DiMarzio built the Air Norton (DP193) as the Airbucker take on the Norton, originally aiming it at high-gain bridge duty. Instead, it turned out to be one of their best-loved neck pickups. It’s warm without collapsing into mush, hot without smearing into distortion, and it throws off harmonic detail that most neck humbuckers simply don’t bother with.
The patented Air Norton magnetic structure backs off string pull compared to a conventional design, which frees up sustain and gives you noticeably more room to shape dynamics with your pick hand. In the neck slot, expect an open, rounded voice with enough push to sit evenly against pretty much any bridge humbucker – go with 500K pots if you want to keep the top end and harmonics forward. Drop it into the bridge instead and it settles into medium output territory, with firm low end and a bit of bite up top; 250K controls (or a 500K volume paired with a 250K tone) will fatten the highs slightly if you want them tamed.
Good pairing partners: an Air Zone, Tone Zone, or Steve’s Special in the bridge for a power-meets-nuance combo, or an Air Classic Bridge model in the neck alongside an Air Norton in the bridge for a medium-output blues-rock flavor. It also plays well with single-coils like The Cruiser, The Chopper, and Blue Velvet. Recommended for solid body and semi-hollow guitars.
