Description
DiMarzio built the Air Norton as the airbucker take on the Norton, expecting a snarly high-gain bridge pickup — instead they found a neck humbucker that does something most neck pickups can’t: it stays deep and warm without turning to mud, runs hot without falling apart into distortion, and throws off harmonics that are genuinely unusual for a neck position. Credit the patented Air Norton magnetic structure, which cuts string pull so sustain opens up and your pick attack stays expressive instead of getting squashed. Alnico 5 magnet, 4-conductor wiring, 270mV output, 12.58 Kohm DC resistance. Pair it in the bridge with an Air Zone, Tone Zone, or Steve’s Special for power-and-tone balance, or flip the formula and run Air Norton in the bridge against an Air Classic in the neck for a medium-output blues-rock voice.
The DP160FBK Norton handles bridge duty here, F-spaced for trem-equipped guitars. Tonally it sits right between FRED and The Tone Zone — some of FRED’s nasty harmonic edge, more of Tone Zone’s mid-range muscle — using the same dual-resonance patent to sound hotter and bigger than a vintage-style pickup without tipping into distortion-class territory. It’s arguably DiMarzio’s most flexible bridge unit, playing well with Air Classic, PAF 36th Anniversary, PAF Pro, or its own neck sibling here. Alnico 5 magnet, 4-conductor wiring, 352mV output, 12.62 Kohm DC resistance.
