Description
DiMarzio built the Air Norton as the Airbucker take on the Norton, expecting a snarly high-gain bridge pickup — instead they found a neck humbucker with real personality. It’s deep and warm without turning to mud, hot without falling apart into distortion, and it throws off harmonics you rarely get from a neck pickup. The patented Air Norton magnetic structure cuts string pull, so you get longer sustain and pick dynamics that stay expressive instead of flattening out. Alnico 5 magnet, 4-conductor wiring, 270mV output, 12.58 Kohm DC resistance. Pair it with 500K pots if you want maximum treble bite and harmonic sparkle.
On the bridge, the Norton (F-Spaced) sits tonally between FRED and The Tone Zone — some of FRED’s nasty harmonic edge, backed by more midrange muscle and power in the Tone Zone vein. It uses the same dual-resonance design as those two pickups, landing hotter and bigger-sounding than a vintage-voiced humbucker but stopping short of full distortion-class output. It’s arguably DiMarzio’s most flexible bridge pickup, playing well with a wide range of neck partners. Alnico 5 magnet, 4-conductor wiring, 352mV output, 12.62 Kohm DC resistance.
Run together, this set gives solid and semi-hollow body guitars a balanced, medium-output blues-rock voice with plenty of harmonic content on both ends. The Norton also plays nicely with single-coils like The Cruiser, The Chopper, and Blue Velvet if you want to mix and match.
