This set pairs DiMarzio’s two most trusted humbucker designs into one cover-matched, black neck-and-bridge combo — and throws in a set of Elixir Custom Light strings so you’re ready to string up and go.
The DP103BK PAF 36th Anniversary Neck isn’t a copy of an old PAF — it’s a re-engineering of one, built using Larry DiMarzio’s own ’59 Les Paul as the sonic reference point. DiMarzio deliberately weakened the magnetic field to let strings ring out longer, giving the pickup an almost single-coil-like clarity and definition despite being a full humbucker. Custom-coated 42-gauge wire is layered via computer-controlled winding for a precise frequency response, then wax-dipped to kill squeal and microphonics. The nickel-silver cover is plated to stay magnetically transparent, keeping the tone smooth without going muddy — equally comfortable in neck or bridge position.
On the bridge side, the DP160FBK Norton (F-spaced for aligned pole pieces under wound strings) splits the difference between FRED and The Tone Zone — pulling FRED’s snarling harmonic overtones together with Tone Zone-level midrange muscle. It uses the same patented dual-resonance design as both, landing on a tone that’s hotter and bigger than any vintage-style pickup without tipping into full distortion-humbucker territory. It’s widely regarded as one of DiMarzio’s most versatile bridge pickups, pairing well beyond this set with the Air Classic, PAF Pro, or Air Norton.
