Description
DiMarzio took its legendary Super Distortion — the pickup that basically invented the modern high-gain humbucker back in the early 70s — and squeezed it into a soapbar housing. The result is the DP209, a humbucking pickup that drops straight into any P90-routed cavity with no rerouting, no drama, just a hotter, thicker voice waiting where your P90 used to live.
Under the cream cover you still get the DNA of the original Super Distortion: 12 individually adjustable pole pieces for per-string balance and 4-conductor wiring, opening the door to split and parallel coil modes. The coil architecture is slightly different from the classic version, which smooths out the top end a touch — most noticeable up around the higher frets — while keeping that unmistakable aggressive midrange push intact.
It’s built primarily as a bridge pickup, where its ceramic magnet and high output turn amp gain stages into something genuinely mean. Run it in the neck position and it cleans up nicely on lower-gain amp channels. Switch to parallel or split wiring in either position and you’ll trade some volume for extra sparkle and clarity — handy for cutting through a mix without full-on humbucker weight.
Note: this soapbar version isn’t offered with a dog-ear mounting option.
