Eric Johnson built his reputation on Strat tone, but he never stopped reaching for a humbucker-loaded guitar too. When he picked up a fresh Les Paul ’59 reissue, he had one request for DiMarzio: make it sing like an old Gretsch Country Gentleman. The result is the EJ Custom, a full-size humbucker that swaps the usual PAF thickness for something clearer, brighter, and far more articulate under gain.
Don’t be fooled by the DC resistance numbers u2014 on paper they sit close to classic PAF territory, but the EJ Custom behaves nothing like a vintage-voiced ‘bucker. Treble response is pushed up into single-coil range, giving chords and fingerstyle passages real sparkle and separation, while the bass end stays firm enough that nothing turns thin or brittle. Even piled under heavy distortion, notes stay defined instead of collapsing into mush, which is exactly what won Johnson over when he first plugged in.
This particular DP212F is the F-spaced bridge version in exposed white, built for guitars with trem routing or wider string spacing where standard-spaced pickups miss the mark. Drop it into solid, semi-solid, or hollow-body electrics for that in-between voice u2014 humbucker output and hum-cancelling quiet with a top end closer to a single-coil.
