Eric Johnson made his name on a Strat, but he’s always kept a foot in humbucker territory too. When he picked up a reissue Les Paul, he had one request for DiMarzio: make it sing like an old Gretsch Country Gentleman. The result is the EJ Custom, a drop-in replacement for any standard full-size humbucker that trades vintage muddiness for glassy top-end and articulate note separation.
Don’t be fooled by the DC resistance numbers — on paper this pickup looks like a PAF cousin, but it behaves nothing like one. The EJ Custom runs with less output and considerably more treble bite than a typical vintage-voiced humbucker, landing closer to single-coil territory in terms of brightness. What keeps it from sounding thin is a bass response that stays firm and full underneath, so chords stay tight, fingerpicking stays defined, and leads cut through even under heavy gain without turning to mush.
Built for the bridge position, this one shines across solid-body, semi-hollow, and hollow-body electrics alike, wherever you need clarity that doesn’t collapse under distortion.
