Description
Born from two years of chasing the exact snarl and clarity Steve Vai demanded for his Ibanez JEMs, the Evolution set doesn’t do polite. This F-spaced pair in white covers arrives ready for trem-equipped, floating-bridge builds where pole piece alignment actually matters, and it’s paired here with a fresh set of Ernie Ball EB2223 Super Slinky strings so you can restring while you rewire.
The DP158FW neck pickup is fat, punchy, and loud without turning to mush — ceramic magnet, 4-conductor wiring, 294mV output, 13.04k DC resistance. The DP159FW bridge pickup steps things up further: tighter, more aggressive, and louder still, at 404mV output and 13.84k DC resistance, also ceramic and 4-conductor.
Both pickups share DiMarzio’s patented dual-resonance design, which pulls out extra harmonic overtones that standard humbuckers leave on the table. The result is a set that was voiced for the stage — high output, aggressive attack, built to cut through a loud band — but the presence and definition translate just as well in the studio, slicing through dense mixes instead of getting buried in them.
Fair warning: these aren’t forgiving pickups. Feed them a hot amp and sloppy technique and they’ll expose every flaw. Feed them real chops and they’ll burn exactly like Vai intended.
