Description
Long before boutique high-output pickups took over, the DiMarzio HS-3 was already the go-to single-coil for guitarists chasing classical-influenced metal tones out of a Strat. It’s not a screamer by spec, and that’s the point: this pickup is voiced for clarity under saturation, giving you a musical, slightly compressed overdrive instead of a fizzy, brittle edge.
Feed it into a cranked Marshall with an overdrive pedal in front and you’ll hear why players have leaned on this combo for decades — kick the pedal on for extra sustain and grind, then click it off and the HS-3 cleans up fast and predictably, with no mud or smear. It’s also quiet enough to trust on stage or in a session where noise floor actually matters.
Drop it into any of the three Strat positions for a subtly warmer take on that classic single-coil voice, or build a mixed set with the HS-4 in the neck and HS-2 in the middle. It also pairs nicely alongside bridge humbuckers such as the PAF Pro, PAF, Air Classic, or Norton when used in the middle or neck slots.
