Seth Lover’s original PAF set the bar for humbucker tone, but DiMarzio didn’t just copy the numbers off an old pickup — they used Larry DiMarzio’s personal 1959 cherry sunburst Les Paul as the benchmark. What they found was surprising: a genuinely weak magnetic field that somehow produces a sound that’s articulate and almost single-coil-like in its clarity, letting strings ring out longer instead of choking their own sustain.
To recreate that, DiMarzio deliberately duplicated the softer magnetic pull rather than chasing more output. The coils are built on computer-controlled winders using 42-gauge custom-coated wire, layered with precision to land exactly on the frequency response they were after. Every unit is then wax-dipped in DiMarzio’s own formula to keep squeal and microphonic feedback out of the equation, so you get vintage character without vintage headaches.
The nickel-silver cover isn’t just cosmetic — its new plating is more magnetically transparent than old-school covers, letting the pickup breathe the way an uncovered PAF would. The result is a humbucker that’s smooth without turning to mud, equally comfortable doing warm neck duty or handling bridge position the way the best 50s-era humbuckers did on either side of the guitar.
