DiMarzio didn’t just clone an old PAF spec sheet — they measured the actual pickups in Larry DiMarzio’s 1959 cherry sunburst Les Paul and reverse-engineered what made them special: a deliberately weak magnetic field that lets strings ring out longer while the attack stays defined and articulate, almost single-coil-like in clarity.
To get there, the coils are wound on computer-controlled winders with 42-gauge custom-coated wire, layered precisely for the frequency response DiMarzio was chasing, then wax-dipped to kill squeal and microphonic feedback before it starts. The covers are nickel-silver with a plating process that’s more magnetically transparent than vintage originals, keeping the tone open rather than choked.
Don’t expect a one-trick vintage pickup, either. This set is smooth without turning muddy, and it holds up whether you drop it in the neck or the bridge — the same versatility that made the best 1950s humbuckers legendary. Clean up with your pick hand and it breathes; dig in and it pushes into natural overdrive without any extra gain staging.
This bundle includes the humbucker set in black plus a set of Ernie Ball strings, so you can restring while you’re in there rewiring.
