This DiMarzio humbucker set tackles the classic neck/bridge pairing question by going with two pickups that were engineered to complement each other while covering very different jobs. The PAF 36th Anniversary Neck isn’t a simple PAF clone — DiMarzio built it using Larry DiMarzio’s own ’59 Les Paul as a sonic reference, replicating that guitar’s unusually weak magnetic field to let strings ring out longer and giving the pickup an almost single-coil-like clarity. Custom-coated 42-gauge wire is layered via computer-controlled winding for a precise frequency response, then wax-dipped to kill squeal, and it’s topped with a nickel-silver cover chosen for its magnetic transparency. The result is smooth without turning muddy, and flexible enough to work in either the neck or bridge position.
On the bridge side, the Norton sits tonally between FRED and The Tone Zone — pulling some of FRED’s snarly harmonic bite while carrying more midrange punch and power like the Tone Zone. It uses the same dual-resonance design as both of those pickups to land somewhere hotter and bigger than a vintage-style humbucker, but shy of full distortion-class output. That range makes it one of DiMarzio’s more adaptable bridge options, equally at home paired with the PAF 36th, PAF Pro, Air Classic, or Air Norton.
