The DiMarzio PAF Master isn’t chasing a vintage reissue for nostalgia’s sake—it’s built to take what made old PAFs special and push it forward. You still get that open, clear, punchy character players associate with the originals, but with more depth in the sustain and cleaner note separation when you dig in.
The trick is in how DiMarzio wound the coils. Rather than balancing them evenly (which is the safe, modern approach), they intentionally left a slight imbalance between the two coils—mimicking the quirky, characterful winding variances found in real vintage PAFs. That asymmetry is a big part of why old PAFs sound the way they do. The difference here is that DiMarzio engineered it deliberately, so you get that unbalanced-coil vibe and voicing without sacrificing the noise cancellation a humbucker is supposed to give you.
This particular version is the bridge pickup, F-spaced to line up properly with string spacing on guitars using Floyd Rose or similar wide-spaced bridges, and finished with a nickel cover for that traditional look and slightly smoother top-end response compared to an open-coil design.
