DiMarzio wound this one around an Alnico 4 magnet rather than the more common Alnico 2 or 5. AL4’s high iron content and energy coefficient give it more body and attack than the pickup’s modest output numbers would suggest. On paper this isn’t a hot pickup – in practice it feels hot, because the response to pick attack is fast and aggressive rather than loud. It’s a bridge pickup that rewards dynamics instead of just amplifying whatever you throw at it.
