Description
This set pairs the DiMarzio PAF Pro (DP151BK) in the neck with the F-spaced Norton (DP160FBK) in the bridge, black covers on both, for a combo that stays articulate under gain without turning to mush.
The PAF Pro dates back to 1986, born out of the need for a pickup that could handle high-gain rigs without losing that open, vintage PAF character. It’s got snap and chunk in the low end, a midrange bump that gives it a subtle vowel-like “aw” voicing (think a wah stuck halfway), and treble that cuts without turning brittle. It works in almost any position, but it especially shines in the neck slot, or as a bridge pickup when you don’t need maximum output. Spec-wise: Alnico 5 magnet, 4-conductor wiring, 300mV output, 8.4 Kohm DC resistance.
The Norton sits tonally between FRED and The Tone Zone, borrowing FRED’s nasty harmonic overtones and pairing them with more midrange muscle and power, closer to Tone Zone territory. It uses the same patented dual-resonance design as those two pickups, giving it a hotter, bigger sound than vintage-style humbuckers without tipping into full distortion-pickup territory. It’s genuinely one of DiMarzio’s most flexible bridge options, and pairs well with necks like the Air Classic, PAF 36th Anniversary, PAF Pro, and Air Norton. Specs: Alnico 5 magnet, 4-conductor wiring, 352mV output, 12.62 Kohm DC resistance.
