Description
Before the Super Distortion® existed, nobody was building pickups to deliberately shove a tube amp into meltdown. Born in the early Seventies as one of the very first aftermarket humbuckers, it rewired what players expected from a pickup swap – and its 3-conductor sibling, the Dual Sound®, followed the same blueprint.
What made it stick around for five decades isn’t just the output, it’s how the power is shaped. You get thick, pushed-forward mids, low end with real weight behind it, and highs that stay fat instead of going brittle. Chords hold together as a wall of sound rather than collapsing into mush, and single notes still cut through with plenty of definition. It’s the tone behind countless platinum records, cranked by players as different as Ace Frehley, Al Di Meola, and Paul Gilbert – proof this pickup covers a lot more ground than just one genre.
This F-spaced, creme-covered version wires up with 4 conductors, so you’re not locked into humbucker-only duty:
- Coil-split for Strat®-style single-coil tones
- Series/parallel switching for extra tonal range
- F-spacing to line up correctly with bridges using wider pole spacing
If you’re chasing the pickup that basically invented the high-output category – and still gets namechecked as the benchmark for it – this is the original, not a tribute.
