Description
DiMarzio didn’t just stretch the original Tone Zone across two extra string slots and call it a 7-string pickup. The Tone Zone 7 is engineered from scratch, with coils and magnet structure calibrated specifically for the wider string spacing and lower fundamental of a 7-string bridge position — so that low B hits hard without turning to mush.
The key move here is the switch to a ceramic magnet instead of the Alnico 5 found in the standard Tone Zone. That swap isn’t about changing the pickup’s character; it’s about physics. On a 7-string, DiMarzio found that ceramic could be tuned to behave like Alnico tonally, while delivering roughly 40% less magnet pull. Less pull means the low B string vibrates more freely, translating into cleaner note definition and a bridge pickup that stays articulate under high-gain, drop-tuned riffing rather than choking itself out.
You still get the aggressive midrange push and compressed punch that made the original Tone Zone a metal and hard rock staple — it’s just been re-balanced so it actually works right on a 7-string.
