Standard Jazz-style pickups were designed around four strings, and it shows the moment you add a low B — output and clarity often sag on that extra string. DiMarzio built the Ultra Jazz 5 to fix exactly that problem, adapting the design principles of the well-loved 4-string Ultra Jazz specifically for 5-string basses rather than just squeezing a wider pole spacing onto the original.
At the heart of the set is DiMarzio’s Virtual Vintage technology, which cancels 60-cycle hum while keeping the pickups’ output and tonal balance consistent across all five strings. No dead spots, no string favoritism — just even response whether you’re digging into the B or working the G. The set is built for passive setups and voiced to deliver that classic Jazz snap and growl, but it’s flexible enough to play nicely with many active onboard preamp systems too, if your bass is wired that way.
This pair pairs a bridge pickup with an Alnico 5 magnet against a neck pickup running Ceramic, a combination chosen to keep the frequency response balanced position to position rather than having one pickup dominate the mix.
