Description
The EMG 707TW-R takes the tone-taming reputation of the original 707 and adds a second personality: a proper stacked single coil, wired in via a push/pull pot, positioned closer to the neck for a sweeter, more Strat-like edge than the standard 707TW. Flip between the two and you get genuinely distinct voices instead of the thin, watered-down quack you’d expect from a simple coil tap.
That’s the key difference here — this isn’t a tapped humbucker borrowing half its windings for a fake single-coil sound. The 707TW-R has an actual separate coil dedicated to that job, so both tones stand on their own.
Where it really earns its keep is on the low B. Alnico V magnets and wide aperture coils were built specifically to stop that string from turning into low-end mush, restoring harmonic detail and definition without losing the tight, controlled feel 7-string players rely on for both riffing and lead work. The upper strings stay articulate and balanced, so nothing gets buried whether you’re voicing Opeth-esque jazz chords or hammering out palm-muted chug patterns.
Suited to bridge or neck duty, the 707TW-R is one of those pickups that reshapes how you approach a 7-string once it’s in — more clarity, more options, same aggressive EMG output.
