Ask any metal or hard rock player what pickup rewired their tone and odds are they’ll say the EMG 81. Ceramic magnets and close-aperture coil construction give it a compressed, in-your-face intensity — tight low end, a scooped mid push, and a treble edge sharp enough to carve leads out of a wall of gain. Drop it in the bridge and your solos stop fighting the mix; they cut through it.
Run it in both bridge and neck and you get that unmistakable, saturated, blistering EMG signature. Prefer more contrast between positions? Pair it with an 85 for a warmer, punchier neck voice, or with a 60 if you want a smoother, more vintage-leaning complement without losing the active clarity.
This particular version wears EMG’s real Chrome finish, and there’s a story behind that word “real.” EMG went looking for a chrome-plated cover cap and found the supply chain couldn’t guarantee consistent quality — plating thickness and process varied batch to batch, and no US manufacturer could produce it to spec. Rather than accept that inconsistency, EMG’s engineers built the solution: a one-piece, mirror-polished stainless steel cover cap, made entirely in-house. It looks like chrome, costs about the same as chrome, but it’s solid polished steel — so the tone stays exactly like the standard molded-cover 81, batch after batch.
