Description
The EMG-89 is basically two guitars’ worth of tone crammed into one active pickup. Alnico V magnets and separate onboard preamps drive both a humbucking mode and a single-coil mode, each with its own tailored output, so you’re not just splitting a coil and hoping for the best.
In humbucker mode, expect that classic EMG-85 territory: thick, warm, and powerful, but never muddy — plenty of clarity and touch sensitivity even under gain. Flip to single-coil mode via the included push-pull pot and the character shifts to something close to an EMG SA — bright, airy, and chimey, with the glassy top-end Strat players chase. Clean tones stay pristine and present in either mode, which makes the 89 equally at home in the bridge or neck, whether you’re chugging through riffs or comping jazz changes.
Since it’s active, you get consistent output and low noise regardless of position or playing style — no fighting your amp for headroom.
