Description
Some tones just belong to one player, and Geezer Butler’s growling, cavernous bass sound is one of them. EMG spent years working directly with Geezer to reverse-engineer the punch and grit he coaxed out of his rig during Black Sabbath’s earliest recordings, then stress-tested the design on the road until it held up night after night.
The result is this GZR-PJ set: a vintage-flavored passive P pickup paired with a split-coil J, both wired solderless for a painless install. Alnico 5 magnets drive both pickups, with custom-wound coils tuned specifically to recapture Geezer’s signature attack. The J pickup’s split-coil design cancels the 60-cycle hum that plagued early ’70s single-coil J pickups, while still pushing out more output and volume than a typical single-coil J — giving you real balance between the P and J sides rather than one overpowering the other.
Plug in and you’re chasing the low end from “Iron Man,” “War Pigs,” and “Paranoid” — deep, tight, and mean, the way Geezer played it decades ago. Geezer himself put it simply: he’d never lent his name to a pickup before this set, because nothing else came close.
