Description
Back in early 2009, James Hetfield handed EMG president Rob Turner a brief that sounded almost contradictory: build a pickup set with the punch and clarity of a passive humbucker, but keep the aggressive, saturated tone of active electronics that defined his sound for decades. The JH Set is the answer, and it’s been Hetfield’s weapon of choice ever since.
The JH-N (neck) starts from the same blueprint as EMG’s 60, but goes bigger — individual ceramic pole pieces sit on a taller, larger core, giving the neck position more attack, higher output, and a fuller low end than you’d expect from a neck pickup. The JH-B (bridge) shares that core design but swaps in steel pole pieces instead of the 81’s bar magnets, which lowers inductance and tightens up the low end while keeping that signature snap and clarity on hand.
This particular set wears EMG’s Metal Works Brushed Chrome finish — U.S.A.-made stainless steel covers that trade the classic all-black EMG look for something a little more industrial without touching the electronics underneath. Installation runs through EMG’s Solderless System, so getting these wired up doesn’t mean breaking out the iron.
- JH-N neck pickup: individual ceramic poles, larger/taller core than the 60, higher output and fuller low end
- JH-B bridge pickup: same core type with steel pole pieces for tighter attack and cleaner low end
- Brushed Chrome stainless steel Metal Works covers
- EMG Solderless Installation System components included
