EMG built the JAX around the DNA of their original passive J pickup, then swapped the ceramic magnets for radiused Alnico V and paired them with the X Series preamp. The result lands right in that sweet spot between old-school warmth and modern active punch — you get the touch sensitivity and rounded top end Alnico is known for, without giving up the clarity and headroom that active electronics bring to the table.
Tonally, the JAX leans vintage: open, woody lows, a midrange that pushes forward without getting honky, and highs that stay smooth rather than glassy. The X Series preamp keeps everything tight and quiet while letting the Alnico magnets do the work of shaping feel and dynamics under your fingers. It’s less “active bass” in the aggressive sense and more “passive tone with active reliability” — hum-free, consistent output, but still expressive.
Because the low end stays controlled and the response is even across the fretboard, this set works equally well on fretted and fretless basses, giving both natural sustain and a full, three-dimensional voice.
