EMG’s P5J takes the beloved PJ formula and stretches it to fit a 5-string neck, giving low-B players the same split-personality tone that’s made the 4-string PJ a staple on countless stages and records.
The setup pairs a split-coil P pickup with a single LJ unit in the bridge position. The P handles the low end with authority — think deep, controlled fundamental that anchors a mix without turning to mud. The LJ picks up where the P leaves off, adding midrange presence and extended top-end clarity that sharpens pick and finger attack alike.
Run them together and you get a genuinely versatile voice: fat, round low notes from the neck pickup blending with the LJ’s cut and definition. Blend to taste, or lean on either pickup solo — dial in thumping Motown warmth one minute and snappy, articulate slap tone the next, all without swapping basses.
Like the rest of EMG’s active line, these are wound and voiced for consistent output and low noise, so the character stays locked in whether you’re tracking quietly at home or fighting stage volume.
