Description
Zakk Wylde didn’t chase a subtle tone, and neither does this pairing. The EMG-ZW set puts the ceramic-magnet EMG-81 in the bridge and the Alnico-loaded EMG-85 in the neck — the same active combo that’s driven his Les Paul roar for decades, now solderless-ready for your own build.
The EMG-81 is the aggressor: ceramic magnets and wide-aperture steel poles deliver a fast, cutting attack with output built for cranked amps and master-volume overdrive. It stays dead quiet even at absurd gain levels, and it’s forgiving enough to carry both riffing and soloing duties if you’re a one-guitar band.
The EMG-85 answers with more low-end weight and a rounder top end, courtesy of its dual Alnico coils and wider aperture. It’s higher output on paper than the 81, but the frequency response keeps rhythm work articulate rather than mushy — great for blues phrasing or thick, natural-sounding overdrive off the front of your amp.
Together, they cover the full spectrum from clear rhythm chording to violent lead tone without needing to touch your amp’s gain knob.
