LR Baggs built the Radius around a simple idea: capture the soundboard’s real motion without the headaches that come from an actual microphone. Instead of a diaphragm out in open air, the Radius uses a .004″ thin-film sensor mounted on a flexible beam, suspended and damped between opposing Neodymium magnets rather than clamped in elastomer or floating in gel. That free-floating design lets it track the smallest dynamic shifts in your playing instantly, with a frequency response that stays smooth, linear, and free of the harshness or coloration typical of soundboard transducers.
Originally developed with the mandolin in mind, the Radius also works well on other small, high-voiced instruments like violin. It’s forgiving about placement compared to most contact pickups, and its output is strong enough to run passively into most acoustic amps with just a standard cable — though pairing it with an external preamp is recommended for the best tone shaping. The housing itself is a CAD-designed, non-resonant conductive ABS case that keeps the internal electronics dead quiet.
