Description

The Phase 2 Passive Soapbar takes the dual-coil J-type formula that’s powered countless great-sounding basses and drops it into a soapbar footprint, ready to swap directly in place of the 5-string EMG 40. No active electronics, no battery compartment to fill in — just a straightforward passive pickup with a lot of wiring flexibility built into its four-conductor cable.

That four-wire setup means you’re not locked into one voice. Run it in parallel for a hum-cancelling tone with a bit more single-coil bite, switch to series wiring when you want maximum output and a fuller, punchier low end, or go single-coil mode to land squarely on that classic Jazz Bass character. It’s one pickup covering a surprising amount of tonal ground depending on how you wire it up.

Under the covers, Alnico 2 rod magnets do the heavy lifting, delivering a punchy, focused response with a smooth, natural top end through the upper mids — the kind of warmth and organic feel that passive pickups tend to have over their active counterparts.

  • Passive 5-string soapbar pickup with dual-coil J-type construction
  • Exposed Alnico 2 rod pole pieces, double row
  • Four-conductor wiring for parallel, series, or single-coil configurations
  • Direct retrofit for the 5-string EMG 40
  • Bridge position, 74mm string spacing (center of low B to center of G)
  • Sold individually or as a calibrated neck/bridge set
