Description
The Fire Blackouts System was built to end the active-vs-passive argument for good. Gus G. — the shredder who tore through arenas with Ozzy Osbourne — wanted the aggression and gain of his Blackouts pickups without sacrificing the touch-sensitivity and string-to-string nuance that passive pickups are known for. So Seymour Duncan built him a hybrid: a matched pair of true passive humbuckers wired into a dual preamp that tucks into one of your guitar’s existing volume knob cavities.
Both pickups use individual pole pieces and Alnico 5 magnets for that classic, detailed humbucker feel — the bridge unit gets a beefier magnet to thicken up low-mids and give leads more meat. The coils are custom-wound for an open, airy top end that doesn’t get smashed flat once the preamp kicks in. That’s the real trick here: a high-output, low-noise differential preamp with generous headroom, so instead of hearing a preamp, you hear your guitar’s wood, your dynamics, your picking hand.
Installation follows the Liberator-style solderless system — bare-wire lockdown connectors mean no iron required if you’re swapping out existing active pickups, and a screwdriver is included. Going from passive? Three extra 25K pots are in the box to get you wired up correctly. Run time is roughly 750 hours on a single 9-volt.
