Description
The AHB-3 EMTY is Mick Thomson’s personal take on the Blackouts formula, developed directly with Seymour Duncan after Mick tracked down Evan Skopp backstage at Loud Park 2008. He wanted more low-end control without sacrificing the searing high-end bite Slipknot’s tone demands, and he stayed hands-on through every stage of the design — wiring, cover printing, even the trademark “seven” stamped on the housing.
Like the AHB-1 and AHB-2 before it, this is a 9-volt active humbucker built for aggressive playing and extreme low tunings, but the EMTY dials in a tighter bottom and a sharper top-end cut specifically for Mick’s attack. Expect thick, dark chord voicings, a strong mid-range shove, and leads that punch through a dense mix without turning to mud.
The AHB series runs less compressed than typical active pickups thanks to an extended frequency response and balanced inputs that fight hum — up to 14dB quieter than other actives, while still delivering more low end, more high end, and more output overall. That noise floor advantage becomes especially obvious once you’re tracking.
