Description
The APS-2 takes the same coil recipe as its sibling the APS-1 and swaps in hand-ground Alnico 2 rod magnets, all cut to equal length and set flush across a flat pattern rather than staggered. Why does that matter? Modern strings (especially an unwound G) and flatter neck radii don’t play nicely with old-school staggered poles – you get hot spots and dead spots. Flattening the magnets evens out the field under each string, so output stays consistent whether you’re fingerpicking near the neck or bending hard up top. Players who dig into vibrato and big bends will notice the difference immediately – no sudden volume spikes or thin notes mid-bend.
Tonally, this is Alnico 2 doing what Alnico 2 does best: a softer, more compressed low end and a sweeter top that rounds off before things get harsh. Compared to an Alnico 5 pickup like the SSL-2, the APS-2 breaks up sooner and with less edge, so it sits beautifully in front of an amp that’s already on the verge of grit. Think country twang, surf shimmer, rockabilly slap, blues phrasing, ska chank, and classic rock crunch – anywhere you want vintage character without ice-pick highs.
