Description
Ever wished your Strat’s lead position had a bit more Telecaster in its DNA? The Twang Banger was engineered exactly for that itch. Seymour Duncan took the classic single-coil formula and bolted on a copper-coated steel bottom plate, which tightens up the low end and pushes the pickup toward that gutsy, muscular Tele-style bark instead of the usual glassy Strat chime.
Under the white cover you’ll find Alnico 2 magnets wrapped in plain enamel wire, wound aggressively to bump the output well above a stock single-coil. It’s still unmistakably a Strat pickup in feel and dynamics, but with a firmer midrange push and a twangy snap that cuts through a mix without turning brittle or thin.
Being reverse-wound/reverse-polarity, the APST-1 also plays nicely with your other Strat pickups — pair it in the middle or neck position with a standard-wound pickup and you’ll cancel hum in those in-between switch positions, a trick most Tele-flavored Strat pickups can’t pull off.
Where does it earn its keep? Anywhere you need chicken-pickin’ twang with real muscle behind it: country, rockabilly, blues, jam-band noodling, classic rock rhythm, even heavier rock tones that need a single-coil edge without going weak on the low strings.
