Description
Long before humbuckers took over, Les Paul was chasing tone with staple-pole P90s in his famous 1953 “Black Beauty” — and that guitar’s snarl and clarity are exactly what Seymour Duncan’s Custom Shop set out to recreate. This bridge pickup swaps the usual screw poles for rectangular alnico staples, a design choice that tightens up the magnetic field and gives the pickup a slightly hotter, more focused voice than a standard soapbar P90.
Expect that classic P90 midrange bark with extra bite on the top end, making chords cut through a mix while single notes still growl with plenty of harmonic complexity. It’s louder and grittier than a Strat-style single coil, yet it keeps the open, airy character that separates P90s from humbuckers — no mud, no wooliness, just honest single-coil dynamics that respond hard to pick attack.
Housed in the traditional soapbar shell with a black cover and nickel pole pieces, it drops straight into any guitar routed for a standard soapbar P90 — no modification needed. Each pickup is wound in Santa Barbara by Seymour Duncan’s Custom Shop, so you’re getting hands-on construction rather than mass-production consistency.

If you want the bark and bite that made P90s a rock and blues staple, but with a bit more push behind it, this is the bridge pickup to reach for.
