Description
This is the pairing that basically wrote the book on “hot-rodded” humbucker tone. Duncan’s SH-4 JB and SH-2N Jazz have been sold together for decades because they’re voiced to complement each other, not just coexist — the bridge brings the snarl, the neck keeps things clear, and together they cover a stupid amount of musical ground.
The SH-4 JB (Zebra) is Duncan’s best-selling pickup for good reason. Overwound coils and an alnico 5 bar magnet give it an aggressive upper-midrange push, a low end that stays tight instead of flabby, and highs with enough harmonic complexity to cut through a dense mix. It’s equally at home barking through a blues shuffle or driving a wall of high-gain metal.
The SH-2N Jazz (Reverse Zebra) was built specifically as the JB’s neck-position counterpart, though it’s flexible enough to pair with most moderate-to-high output bridge humbuckers. Also using an alnico 5 magnet but with a different coil wind, it delivers a bright, glassy top end and a full-but-controlled low end, with scooped mids that give it a smooth, almost hollow-sounding character. Players from Randy Rhoads to Jeff Beck have leaned on this one for its versatility.
- Alnico 5 bar magnets in both pickups
- Nickel silver bottom plates
- 4-conductor lead wire for coil-splitting, series/parallel, and other wiring tricks
- Vacuum wax potted to kill microphonic squeal
- Hand-built in Duncan’s Santa Barbara, CA factory
If you want a set that just works — no guesswork, no mismatched output levels — this is the tried-and-true combo.
