Description
Mark Holcomb built his reputation on riffs that need to stay legible no matter how thick the mix gets, and the Alpha neck pickup was voiced with exactly that in mind. Rather than chasing the usual warm, rounded neck-pickup formula, Holcomb and Seymour Duncan aimed for something hybrid: enough low-end body to still sound like a neck pickup, but with the touch sensitivity and pick-attack clarity you’d expect from a bridge unit.
That balance matters when you’re tracking dense, technical parts for Periphery-style material. Single-note runs and legato lines come through with real definition instead of blurring into mush, while chords retain enough low-mid weight to sit convincingly against the Omega bridge pickup it was designed to pair with.
Spec-wise, the Alpha runs a ceramic magnet with a DCR of 8.02, giving it enough push to stay articulate at high-gain settings without losing dynamics when you back off. It’s wired with 4-conductor shielded cable, so you’ve got the flexibility to wire it for series, parallel, or split configurations depending on how you want to shape the neck-position sound.
Like the rest of the Alpha & Omega lineup, this pickup is made in Santa Barbara, California, and finished in black to match the aggressive, no-nonsense aesthetic Holcomb’s signature gear is known for.
